Police in Jaipur are examining the death of retired Army Colonel Leela Singh, 78, after he allegedly shot himself with his licensed pistol at his residence in Rail Nagar on Thursday. The matter falls under Shyam Nagar police station, and officers say the exact circumstances are still being pieced together.

What police have said so far

According to Shyam Nagar Station House Officer Hari Singh Doodhwal, the incident happened around 10:30 am. Police said Colonel Singh had reportedly been dealing with mental health issues and was distressed by illness. He is said to have gone into his room and allegedly fired the shot while his wife, daughter-in-law and grandchildren were present in the house.

Family members reportedly heard the gunshot, rushed to the room and found him lying on the floor in a pool of blood. They took him to hospital immediately, where doctors declared him dead.

Police response and investigation

After receiving information from the control room, police teams reached the house. Forensic experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory examined the scene and collected evidence, and the licensed pistol was seized.

A post-mortem examination was conducted at SMS Hospital, after which the body was handed over to the family. An unnatural death report has been registered on the basis of a complaint filed by the Colonel’s grandson, and further investigation is underway.

Police said statements of family members will be recorded and the FSL and post-mortem reports will be reviewed to determine the circumstances. At this stage, investigators have not reached any final conclusion.
