Rheinmetall Secures €300 Million Contract to Build Armored Field Hospitals for German Armed Forces

Rheinmetall has entered into a significant contract worth 300 million euros (approximately $348.6 million) to produce mobile, armored field hospitals for the German Armed Forces. The agreement outlines that the initial deliveries of these advanced medical facilities will commence in 2029. The field hospitals are intended to serve German troops stationed in Lithuania as well as in other frontline deployments.

The contract extends until 2040 and includes provisions for additional future orders should the need for more units arise. Notably, the new hospitals will conform to NATO’s Role 2B standard, which qualifies them to conduct emergency surgeries and provide intensive care in proximity to combat zones—a critical capability for military operations.

Each mobile hospital setup will comprise 11 armored trucks equipped with specialized medical containers. These containers are uniquely designed to remain attached to their trucks while being mobilized, facilitating rapid deployment and swift on-field setup during emergencies. The vehicles utilize Rheinmetall’s renowned HX trucks, known for their durability on rugged terrain and enhanced protection against potential attacks.

Once these platforms are operational, they are expected to significantly improve the speed and effectiveness of medical treatment for seriously injured soldiers, addressing gaps in current emergency care protocols.

This initiative forms part of a larger strategy by Berlin to modernize its military infrastructure, enhancing medical readiness for high-risk missions while simultaneously fortifying NATO’s presence along Europe’s eastern borders. Dr. Deniz Akitürk, managing director of Rheinmetall Project Solutions overseeing the program, emphasized the project’s importance, stating, “This will enable us to provide our soldiers on the ground with the best possible medical care.”

In addition to this contract, earlier in the year, Rheinmetall secured a separate agreement worth several million euros for the provision of 120 military medical trucks, further bolstering Germany’s military medical capabilities. Additionally, in August 2024, the German government awarded Rheinmetall a contract for Forward Surgical Team stations, which also incorporate advanced medical systems and are configurable to create larger treatment centers.

Further enhancing its medical transport capabilities, Germany has recently acquired a fleet of protected medical transport containers from Airbus, designed for addressing minor wounds and injuries. This concerted effort aligns with Germany’s strategic goal to enhance military effectiveness and readiness in complex operational environments.
