Robin Radar Systems, a Netherlands-based company, has unveiled an enhanced version of its counter-drone radar, aiming to bolster defenses against increasingly prevalent threats posed by combat drones such as the Shahed. This development, named the IRIS Long-Range Mode, is powered by a software upgrade that allows for rapid switching between detection ranges of 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) and 12 kilometers (7.5 miles).
The ability to vary the detection range significantly extends the operational window for defenders when engaging high-speed drones that can travel at rates exceeding 180 kilometers (111 miles) per hour. Kristian Brost, General Manager of Robin Radar USA, emphasized the strategic importance of this advancement, stating, “Every extra kilometer of detection gives defenders more precious seconds to react, more chances to protect critical infrastructure, and ultimately, more lives saved.” This focus on reaction time highlights a shift in counter-drone defense strategies, illustrating that modern solutions are increasingly reliant on sophisticated software rather than solely on hardware.
The IRIS radars have undergone rigorous testing and enhancements based on extensive use in Ukraine, where feedback from local operators has been integrated into the system’s development. Weighing a mere 29 kilograms (64 pounds), the radar is adept at identifying small, high-velocity drones while effectively distinguishing them from environmental clutter such as birds. It provides early warning alerts and precise tracking updates, even in dynamic scenarios. Furthermore, its 360-degree azimuth coverage combined with a 60-degree elevation capability ensures comprehensiveness in threat detection.
One of the standout features of the upgraded system is its compatibility with existing IRIS units, requiring no hardware replacements. This means that operators can apply the enhancements directly in the field, significantly simplifying the upgrade process. CEO Siete Hamminga heralded this development as a transformative step in counter-drone technology, underscoring the importance of user feedback in refining system capabilities. He stated, “By listening to our users on the frontline, we’ve redefined the capabilities of an off-the-shelf system, delivering a battlefield-proven solution that is now being made available worldwide.”
As the landscape of defense technology evolves through software innovations, Robin Radar Systems is positioning itself at the forefront of this trend, highlighting a commitment to leading the charge in next-generation counter-drone defenses.
