Romania has formalized an agreement with German manufacturer Armored Car Systems (ACS) to enhance its military capabilities through the acquisition of Enok AB light armored patrol vehicles. This move is part of a strategic initiative to integrate advanced mobile anti-tank defense units into the Romanian Armed Forces’ operational framework.
The Enok ABs are expected to significantly contribute to missions necessitating rapid deployment and are designed for high mobility in dynamic combat scenarios. ACS Sales Engineering Head Stefan Koppold highlighted the vehicles’ battlefield efficacy, emphasizing their role as a core component of mobile anti-tank systems. “In Ukraine, it is clear that this strategy is very efficient,” he noted, suggesting that the operational success seen in recent conflicts could influence the deployment strategies of NATO allies.
The timeline for delivery of the Enok ABs is projected to extend until 2026, although the specific number of units being procured remains undisclosed.
The Enok AB is built on the robust Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV platform and features a six-cylinder diesel engine complemented by a 4×4 all-terrain transmission system. It boasts Level 2 NATO-compliant STANAG 4569 armor, providing effective protection against grenade strikes and projectiles, including those from 155-millimeter artillery. Additionally, the vehicle is engineered to withstand rifle fire, land mines, and improvised explosive devices, making it a versatile option for contemporary warfare.
The Enok AB has already been integrated into the forces of other nations, with operators including the National Guard of Cyprus and the Czech Republic’s 601st Special Forces Group, showcasing its adaptability and reliability in varied military contexts. As Romania progresses with this acquisition, it aims to bolster its armed forces’ readiness and responsiveness in an increasingly complex security landscape.
