Russia Criticises Western Allies At UN For Kursk Incursion
The goal of Ukraine’s Kursk incursion appears to be to force Russia to pull troops out of Ukraine to defend Russian territory against the Ukrainian cross-border assault, a U.S. official said. Russia criticised Western allies of Ukraine at the United Nations on Tuesday for not condemning Kyiv’s incursion into the Russian region of Kursk, accusing Ukrainian forces of killing civilians and questioning the goals of the cross-border assault.
Thousands of Ukrainian soldiers began the surprise attack a week ago, a move that Russian President Vladimir Putin said was aimed at improving Kyiv’s negotiating position ahead of possible talks and slowing the advance of Russian forces along the front. Russia has been rushing reinforcements to the region, and Kyiv claimed on Tuesday that some units from the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson sectors of the frontline in southern Ukraine were being redeployed to the Kursk region.
Russian president that 28 settlements in the region were under Ukrainian control and that Kyiv’s troops had penetrated up to 12km inside Russia along a 40km stretch of the border. Diplomats from Syria, Belarus, and North Korea spoke in support of Russia at the informal Security Council meeting.
