In a significant escalation of ongoing hostilities, Russian air defenses successfully intercepted and shot down 660 Ukrainian drones overnight, marking one of the highest daily totals since the onset of the conflict. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that these drones were downed across more than a dozen regions, including key areas such as the capital, Moscow, the annexed Crimean Peninsula, as well as the Black Sea and Sea of Azov.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that at least 47 drones targeting the capital were intercepted. He shared updates via Telegram, stating, “Emergency services specialists are working where the debris fell,” although he did not report any casualties or damage resulting from the drone strikes.
In addition, a “massive” drone attack affected the Tula region, located approximately 180 kilometers (112 miles) south of Moscow. Dmitry Milyaev, the governor of Tula, reported that a private residential home was struck in the Shchekino district, leading to injuries to a woman as a result of the attack.
As the conflict drags on into its fifth year, Ukraine has notably intensified its long-range drone strike campaign against Russia. These strikes have increasingly focused on vital energy infrastructure, with the intention of crippling the Kremlin’s funding sources for the war effort. A recent attack attributed to Ukrainian forces even resulted in a fire at a refinery in southeastern Moscow. The ongoing developments underline the escalating tensions and the persistent aerial confrontations in the region.
