Russian strikes across Ukraine on Wednesday resulted in the deaths of 13 individuals and left approximately 50 wounded, according to regional authorities. This surge in violence comes over four years after the onset of the Russian invasion, with both sides increasing their attacks in recent months, leading to a troubling rise in civilian casualties.
Recent reports from the United Nations indicate that June marked the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022, underscoring the escalating intensity of the conflict.
In specific incidents, daytime attacks targeted industrial and medical facilities in the Black Sea port city of Odesa, as well as in the northeastern city of Sumy, located near the Russian border. Sumy regional governor Oleg Grygorov reported that “the enemy launched six guided aerial bombs,” resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to 17 others. Among the deceased were a woman and a man, while the gender of another severely injured individual could not be determined due to the extent of their injuries.
In Odesa, the city experienced another barrage of Russian drone and missile attacks directed at its port and civilian infrastructure, continuing a pattern that has persisted for five consecutive days. Governor Oleg Kiper stated that this onslaught resulted in three fatalities and at least eight injuries.
Authorities reported additional casualties elsewhere in Ukraine, including one death in the southern Mykolaiv region, three in Kryvyi Rih, and two in Donetsk, an area that is largely occupied by Russian forces. In the southern Zaporizhzhia region, strikes resulted in three deaths and 15 injuries, as rescue services shared images showing firefighters evacuating casualties from buildings with their facades devastated.
The Ukrainian Air Force disclosed that the country faced a total of 122 attack drones on the same day, managing to shoot down 101, alongside intercepting two missiles. Meanwhile, Russia’s defense ministry announced that its forces had targeted key areas including the ports of Odesa, Chornomorsk, and Dnipro-Buh, which are integral to supplying the Ukrainian armed forces, as well as attacking fuel depots and drone manufacturing plants.
In response to the ongoing conflict, Ukrainian forces have escalated their attacks on cargo ships within the Sea of Azov, a vital transport hub for Russian agricultural products and resupplies to annexed Crimea. This strategic shift has prompted Russia to reconsider its transport routes in light of the increased hostilities.
As Russian bombardments become more intense, concerns continue to grow for the safety and well-being of civilians in urban areas across Ukraine.
