Saab has successfully launched the third and final Gotland-class submarine for the Swedish Navy, following extensive mid-life upgrades on the vessel. The HMS Halland underwent a thorough modernization process, including significant enhancements to its systems and sensors, conducted at Saab’s shipyard in Karlskrona, which is noted as Sweden’s largest naval base.
This launch signifies the conclusion of upgrade works on the Gotland-class submarines, which originally entered service in March 1997. The modernization effort has played a critical role in extending the operational life of these submarines while simultaneously bolstering the country’s naval capabilities. The first two submarines in the class, HMS Gotland and HMS Uppland, successfully completed their upgrades in 2018 and 2020, respectively.
In addition to the enhancements on the HMS Halland, approximately 20 new systems integrated into the modernized submarines are set to be introduced on the Swedish Navy’s incoming Blekinge-class submarines. This forward-looking approach is expected to further elevate Sweden’s maritime defense capabilities.
Mats Wicksell, Head of Saab’s Business Area Kockums, emphasized the strategic importance of this launch amidst growing security concerns in the region. “Securing critical underwater infrastructure and sea lanes is more important than ever. The launch of HMS Halland is a testament to Saab’s ability to upgrade and deliver advanced submarines with the capabilities the Swedish Navy requires,” Wicksell stated. He highlighted that the addition of HMS Halland strengthens NATO’s collective defense posture in the Baltic Sea, particularly as Stockholm has recently deployed a patrol vessel under NATO command for enhanced maritime surveillance in the area.
