Saab has formalized a contract to equip the Canadian Armed Forces with the Carl-Gustaf M4 man-portable, multi-role weapon system, valued at $5.6 million. The contract encompasses an undisclosed number of M4 units, along with Saab’s advanced Fire Control Device 558. The delivery of these systems is scheduled for completion by March 2027.
Simon Carroll, president of Saab Canada, expressed pride in this contract, emphasizing that it underscores the company’s expertise in delivering modern, combat-proven solutions. He stated that this order not only reinforces Saab’s relationship with Canada but also enhances the operational capabilities of the Canadian Armed Forces. “Canada is an important customer for Saab, and we are proud to continue supporting the Canadian Armed Forces with systems that enhance their operational effectiveness,” Carroll noted.
The Carl-Gustaf M4 is a highly versatile weapon system utilized by military forces in over 50 countries, including Australia, Lithuania, and Poland. Designed primarily for portable infantry support, the M4 excels in close-range combat situations. It fires 84mm ammunition, particularly suited for anti-armor and personnel missions, boasting an impressive rate of fire of six rounds per minute. Each unit is priced around $20,000, while the cost of ammunition can range from $500 to $3,000 per round, depending on the type.
In addition to hardware supply, Saab recently introduced the Ground Combat Indoor Trainer, a sophisticated virtual training platform for M4 operators. This initiative aims to provide ground combat forces with realistic training experiences that surpass existing market offerings, ensuring that troops are well-prepared for modern combat environments.
