In a notable advancement for India’s naval capabilities, senior officers from the Indian Armed Forces were recently airlifted from the sea by Indian Navy helicopters to the naval base in Karwar, Karnataka. This operation was to provide these leaders with a comprehensive update on the progression of Project Seabird Phase II, a critical initiative aimed at enhancing the strategic defense posture of the nation.
Project Seabird, also formally recognized as INS Kadamba or Naval Base Karwar, is presently in its Phase II expansion stage, which is set to position it as the largest naval base in the eastern hemisphere upon its completion. Launched in 2005, the project is designed to bolster the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy across the Indian Ocean Region, serving as a pivotal base for maritime operations.
During the visit, high-ranking officials from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force commended the ambitious scale of Project Seabird, emphasizing its critical role in strengthening national defense. This gathering of military leadership not only showcased the collaborative spirit among the armed forces but also underscored the project’s significance in enhancing regional security.
The visit was part of the joint military exercise TROPEX25, where the senior military leaders had embarked on the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant as of January 30, 2025. This exercise offered them valuable insights into maritime operations and the integration of various military branches.
The event also highlighted the Indian Navy’s dedication to joint operations. The Vice Chief of Air Staff (VCAS) notably flew in a MiG-29K trainer to the INS Vikrant, signaling a commitment to inter-service cooperation amidst various military endeavors.
