During a routine cleaning operation at Dal Lake on Saturday, officials from the Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA) made a significant discovery: remnants of a shell linked to Operation Sindoor, India’s military response following the Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22 that resulted in the tragic loss of 26 lives.
The shell pieces were unearthed near Oont Kadal, an area previously affected by a serious incident on May 10, 2025, when a missile-like object had struck the lake, causing explosions that reverberated throughout Srinagar. Upon the discovery, the remnants were quickly transported to the nearest police station for further examination and necessary actions in accordance with safety protocols.
Operation Sindoor, carried out in May 2025, was a decisive moment in India’s military history, aimed at retaliating against the terrorist activities that had shaken the nation. The recovery of the shell remnants serves as a stark reminder of the intensity of the operation and highlights the ongoing imperative for vigilance in such areas.
Authorities emphasized that the cleaning and recovery process forms part of a larger initiative to ensure the maintenance of Dal Lake, which is not only a vital tourist attraction but also a cultural treasure for the region. The officials reiterated their commitment to public safety and environmental preservation, underlining the importance of keeping the area secure and free from remnants of violence.
The discovery reinforces the significance of ongoing efforts to monitor and manage the environment, especially in areas with a complex history marked by conflict and recovery.
