Shield AI Unveils Upgraded V-BAT Drone for Enhanced ISR Capabilities

Shield AI has unveiled an upgraded version of its V-BAT unmanned aerial system, aimed at enhancing intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities for both U.S. military and allied forces. The revamped model features a heavy fuel engine compatible with JP-5, a widely-utilized kerosene-based jet fuel for maritime operations, allowing for prolonged flight durations exceeding 13 hours.

One of the standout attributes of the new V-BAT is its fully autonomous vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capability, enabling it to launch and land without the need for human intervention. The upgraded design maintains the drone’s ability to operate without the necessity of runways, catapults, or net recovery systems, thereby simplifying deployment in a variety of environments.

The V-BAT drone continues to leverage Shield AI’s proprietary autonomy software, Hivemind, combined with beyond-line-of-sight satellite communications technology to facilitate long-range missions. Furthermore, the updated model supports the integration of various mission payloads, including wide-area motion imagery, electronic warfare devices, and synthetic aperture radar, broadening its operational versatility.

Currently, the V-BAT is in active service with maritime and expeditionary units of the U.S. military. In July 2024, Shield AI secured a significant contract worth $198.1 million to supply the V-BAT system to the U.S. Coast Guard through 2029. The drone’s reputation is gaining traction internationally, with the Romanian Navy, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, and the Indian Armed Forces also incorporating the V-BAT into their operations.

Brandon Tseng, President of Shield AI, emphasized the shift among modern militaries towards more efficient ISR solutions, stating, “The most forward-thinking militaries are swapping out their larger, more expensive ISR aircraft—which are too vulnerable for how much they cost—and accomplishing the same missions with smaller, more affordable drones, like V-BAT.” He further highlighted the V-BAT’s versatility, noting it is designed for a wide array of missions: “V-BAT is built for the full spectrum of drone missions—from deep-penetration ISR-T where GPS and comms are jammed to border security, search and rescue, and drug interdiction. If there’s a mission out there, V-BAT can do it—faster, cheaper, and where others can’t.”
