South Korea to Build Communication Relay Drone to Enhance Military UAV Operations

SK Telecom (SKT) has partnered with four domestic technology firms to develop an innovative communication relay drone aimed at increasing the operational range of South Korea’s military drones. This collaborative effort comes in response to the growing need for enhanced drone capabilities in national defense.

Under a recently established memorandum of understanding, the participating companies—Funjin, Conan Technology, Contela, and Practory—will leverage their unique expertise to address various aspects of the project. Funjin will utilize its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to improve communication between drones, ensuring seamless data exchange and operational coordination. Meanwhile, Conan Technology will focus on producing advanced edge tactical equipment, which is essential for facilitating rapid data processing throughout the drone communication network.

With the integration of these specialized functions, the project aims to enhance the military’s unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations, allowing for more extensive and effective surveillance and reconnaissance missions. The advancements in drone communication are expected to play a critical role in enhancing South Korea’s defense strategies, particularly in an increasingly competitive geopolitical landscape.

As military applications of drone technology continue to evolve, collaborations such as this one signal a significant shift toward leveraging cutting-edge technology for national security purposes.
