South Korea to Send Cheongung-II Air Defense Interceptors to UAE Amid Rising Iranian Attacks

South Korea has agreed to send Cheongung-II air defense interceptors to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in response to an urgent request from the Gulf nation, which has been under threat from drone and missile assaults attributed to Iran. This decision marks a significant development in military cooperation between the two countries amid heightened regional tensions.

Reports from South Korean media indicate that the initial delivery will include more than 30 interceptors of the Cheongung-II air defense system. These interceptors are expected to be transported via a C-17 military aircraft that landed in South Korea recently. According to The Chosun Daily, an unnamed government official stated that South Korea has expedited the delivery timetable for a portion of the guided missiles at the UAE’s request.

The UAE currently employs two batteries of the Cheongung-II system as part of a comprehensive air defense strategy, which further includes the US-manufactured MIM-104 Patriot system. Initially, the UAE sought to hasten the delivery of eight additional Cheongung-II systems as part of a larger $3.5 billion deal established in 2022 with South Korean defense firms LIG Nex1 and Hanwha Systems. However, South Korea faced limitations in accommodating this request due to existing obligations, including similar agreements with Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

The deployment of the Cheongung-II system has already yielded promising results in combat situations. During its first operational phase in the UAE, the system achieved an interception success rate exceeding 96%. This effectiveness comes in the wake of a series of escalatory military actions, including US and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets, which have triggered retaliatory missile and drone assaults from Iran across various locations in the Middle East. Reports indicate that the UAE’s air and missile defense mechanisms managed to neutralize 161 ballistic missiles and 689 drones in just three days of conflict, showcasing an interceptor rate above 90%.

Queries surrounding the Cheongung-II have not been limited to the UAE; according to South Korean Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik, interest has been expressed by other nations as well. This surge in inquiries is attributed to the system’s impressive performance in actual combat, suggesting a growing demand for advanced air defense solutions. An industry insider noted that this interest extends to the United States, indicating a broader market potential for such defense technologies.

The Cheongung-II system is designed as a medium-range surface-to-air defense solution, capable of countering various aerial threats, including aircraft and tactical ballistic missiles. A typical battery configuration consists of four launchers, a radar system, and a fire control center. Each interceptor, weighing approximately 400 kilograms (around 882 pounds), employs a hit-to-kill approach, effectively targeting ballistic missiles at altitudes surpassing 15 kilometers (about 9 miles) and ranges up to 20 kilometers (around 12 miles). For aircraft, its effective operational range extends to nearly 50 kilometers (approximately 31 miles), with an interception capability reaching altitudes of 20 kilometers (approximately 12 miles).

With ongoing geopolitical uncertainties, the collaboration between South Korea and the UAE highlights a strategic partnership bolstered by advanced defense technology and military readiness.
