The Headquarters Southern Command of the Indian Army commemorated its 131st Raising Day with a solemn and inspiring ceremony at Pune Military Station, marking its legacy as the oldest and largest command of the Indian Army. This significant event served as an opportunity to honor outstanding achievers who have made notable contributions to enhancing the commandโs combat readiness and operational excellence.
The ceremony featured Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Southern Command, who presented awards to distinguished individuals recognized for their exemplary service. One notable recipient included a woman in a traditional blue outfit, who received a memento from Lt Gen Seth, highlighting the contributions of women in the armed forces. The event also recognized other personnel, including military officers in uniform, reinforcing the value placed on dedication and exemplary service within the command. The backdrop for the ceremony prominently displayed the Southern Command insignia alongside the theme โ131st Raising Dayโ and the motto โเคเคฏเฅ เคตเคงเฅ เคตเคพ เคธเคเคเฅเคฐเคพเคฎเฅโ (Victory or Death in Battle).
In his address, Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth conveyed heartfelt greetings to all ranks, acknowledging their unwavering dedication and service to the nation. He stated, โThis day is a reaffirmation of Southern Commandโs resolve to uphold its proud traditions while striving for excellence in service to the nation.โ His remarks emphasized the commandโs commitment to the ethos of #NationFirst and #ServiceBeforeSelf, principles that continue to guide their operations and mission.
Established in 1895, the Southern Command has played a crucial role in Indiaโs defence history, including significant contributions to the integration of princely states, the liberation of Goa in 1961, and the Indo-Pak wars of 1965 and 1971. The command spans 11 states and four union territories and serves as an essential hub for defence industries and strategic operations, promoting self-reliance in defence manufacturing. Notably, the Raising Day celebrations coincided with the ongoing โEchoes of Valourโ initiative, launched on March 29, 2025, aimed at highlighting the commandโs storied contributions to national security.
The event was well attended by serving personnel, civil defence staff, and dignitaries, underscoring the commandโs deep ties with the community. The 131st Raising Day not only celebrated the rich history of the Southern Command but also reinforced its continued commitment to safeguarding the nation with valor and dedication.
