Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth

Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Command, recently undertook a significant visit to the Artillery Centre in Hyderabad, as part of the Indian Army’s initiative toward modernization and enhancement of military training. The visit is particularly notable for its focus on the integration of advanced technologies, including virtual reality training, into the intensive 31-week program aimed at Agniveers, the short-term recruits introduced under the Agnipath Scheme launched in 2022.

According to official data from the Ministry of Defence, the transition of Agniveers into permanent military roles is highly selective, with only about 25% expected to progress based on performance assessments. This underscores the scheme’s intent to cultivate a highly capable and efficient future force.

During his visit, Lt Gen Seth received an extensive briefing on key training initiatives and significant upgrades to the infrastructure at the centre, which have been designed to provide comprehensive military training. He praised the Centre for maintaining exceptional standards and emphasized the importance of harnessing technology to better prepare soldiers for the evolving challenges of modern warfare. The Army Commander articulated the vital role of the centre in establishing a foundational discipline, military competence, and a strong sense of ethos deemed essential for an advanced military force.

In addition to the training provisions, the visit featured an interaction with acclaimed athletes, including Arjuna Awardee Sub Satish Joshi and Dhyanchand Awardee Sub Manjeet Singh, both of whom are attached to the Indian Army Watermanship Training Node. He also engaged with members of the Services Handball Team at the Indian Army Handball Node. This engagement illustrates the Army’s commitment to not only combat preparedness but also excellence in sports. Research published in the Journal of Military and Strategic Studies indicates that physical training—such as that offered through these specialized programs—enhances cognitive resilience, potentially improving the effectiveness of troops in active operations.

The visit also encompassed a tour of Matruchaya, a notable boarding facility catering to Divyangans, or persons with disabilities. Lt Gen Seth applauded the efforts of Special Educators and Caregivers dedicated to supporting these individuals. This initiative aligns with Maharashtra’s 2022 policy aimed at aiding its substantial population of 29.6 lakh disabled residents, showcasing an often-overlooked aspect of the Southern Command’s welfare efforts. Such programs reflect the Army’s balanced approach, focusing not only on military proficiency but also on contributing positively to societal welfare.

In conclusion, Lt Gen Seth’s visit to the Artillery Centre reinforces the Southern Command’s commitment to Training Excellence, Future Readiness, and Technological Absorption, establishing it as a frontrunner in the Indian Army’s transformative journey over the next decade.
