Spain’s acquisition of 18 C-295 tactical transport aircraft from Airbus marks a significant step in modernizing its Air and Space Force. This move is aimed at replacing the aging CN-235 and C-212 aircraft that have been in service since the 1970s, aligning with the nation’s strategy to enhance operational capabilities and ensure a unified fleet for various missions.
The new C-295s are set to complement Spain’s existing fleet of aircraft, with additional C-295s commissioned since the 1990s, alongside 16 more units ordered earlier in 2023. The delivery schedule is structured to span several years, with expectations for handover of the first batch occurring between 2026 and 2028, while the subsequent group will arrive from 2030 to 2032.
In terms of operational use, half of the newly acquired aircraft will focus on training and troop movements, currently responsibilities of the older CN-235s stationed at the Military Air Transport School in Salamanca. The remaining units will be adapted for both manual and automatic airdrops for paratroopers and cargo, replacing the functions performed by C-212s at the Military Parachuting School located in Alcantarilla, Murcia.
This procurement not only includes the aircraft but also encompasses a comprehensive ground training package for both sites. Components of this package involve ground fight simulators, computer-based instruction solutions, and supporting software, ensuring that personnel are adequately prepared for the new systems. Additionally, Airbus is committed to providing long-term sustainment and management services, extending support for training projects until 2032.
Jean-Brice Dumont, head of the air power division at Airbus Defence and Space, emphasized that this deal reflects Spain’s commitment to enhancing its air capabilities and reinforcing national strategic autonomy. With this acquisition, the Spanish Air and Space Force will expand its fleet to include a total of 46 C-295s in different configurations, such as transport, maritime patrol, and surveillance.
The Airbus C-295 aircraft itself is designed with a length of 25 meters (82 feet) and a wingspan of 28 meters (92 feet). It features a fuel capacity of 7,500 liters and can carry a maximum payload of 9,000 kilograms (19,842 pounds), accommodating up to 70 personnel. The C-295 is powered by twin Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127G engines, offering 2,645 horsepower, with a cruising speed of 260 knots (482 kilometers or 299 miles per hour) and a range of up to 5,740 kilometers (3,567 miles).
This modernization initiative is part of Spain’s broader commitment to strengthening its defense infrastructure and capabilities as a NATO member, showcasing a strategic focus on maintaining an agile and effective aerial fleet.
