Speculation Around Dhoni and Tendulkar's Potential Military Involvement Amidst India-Pakistan Tensions

Tensions between India and Pakistan have surged following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, prompting India to launch retaliatory strikes under the initiative known as Operation Sindoor. Amidst this backdrop, public speculation has arisen regarding the potential deployment of sports icons Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar, both of whom hold honorary military ranks in the Indian armed forces, to the frontlines if a full-scale war were to erupt.

Dhoni, holding the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army’s Parachute Regiment, and Tendulkar, who is a Group Captain in the Indian Air Force, have been recognized more for their symbolic roles intended to inspire the youth and instill patriotism than for any actual combat readiness. Although they have undergone some ceremonial training, experts stress that their positions are primarily motivational.

A recent government notification has empowered the Chief of Army Staff to mobilize personnel from the Territorial Army for essential duties. This move has intensified speculation about whether celebrities with honorary ranks could be called upon during a national crisis. However, military analysts clarify that such honorary appointments are largely ceremonial and do not equate to being combat-ready. Retired Lieutenant Colonel (Dr.) Satish Dhage commented, “While the Territorial Army can be mobilized during national emergencies, honorary officers like Dhoni and Tendulkar are not suited for combat. Their role is inspirational.”

The Territorial Army comprises civilian volunteers who train for potential mobilization during wartime or national emergencies and has played pivotal roles in significant conflicts, including the Indo-China War of 1962 and the Kargil War of 1999. Cricketers who have transitioned into military roles are exceptional cases, with Hemu Adhikari serving in World War II as one notable example.

In addition to Dhoni and Tendulkar, other prominent figures, including Kapil Dev, Abhinav Bindra, Nana Patekar, and Mohanlal, have been honored with similar positions within the Territorial Army. These appointments are mainly seen as a means to promote civil-military relationships and serve as a bridge connecting civilians to the armed forces.

While the Territorial Army can be activated under extraordinary circumstances, deploying honorary officers like Dhoni and Tendulkar to active combat roles remains highly unlikely. Their military ranks are a testament to their achievements and deep-rooted patriotic spirit, but they do not carry the obligation for combat responsibilities in times of war.

In summary, unless India faces an extreme national emergency where every available resource is required, it is highly improbable that Dhoni and Tendulkar would be sent to the frontlines. Their honorary military ranks signify their status as national icons rather than frontline soldiers.
