Sweden Condemns Israel's Plans for Control of Gaza, Citing International Law Violations

Sweden’s Foreign Minister expressed strong opposition on Monday to Israel’s recently announced plans to assert control over the Gaza Strip, labeling the move a violation of international law. This condemnation follows Israel’s approval of an expanded military offensive aimed at what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described as the “conquest” of Gaza and the subsequent displacement of its residents.

In a video statement shared on his Telegram channel, Netanyahu declared, “We will take control of all the territory of the Strip.” He emphasized the necessity for actions that “cannot be stopped” to achieve this objective.

Maria Malmer Stenergard, Sweden’s Foreign Minister, criticized these intentions, particularly if they lead to the annexation of Palestinian territory. “If this means annexation, it is against international law,” she asserted, reinforcing Sweden’s commitment to recognizing the Palestinian state since 2014. Stenergard maintained that Gaza’s territory must remain intact and urged the Israeli government to permit the resumption of humanitarian aid, as the World Health Organization has reported that approximately two million individuals in Gaza are facing starvation.

Stenergard detailed that Sweden has consistently pressed the Israeli government to ensure unhindered access for humanitarian aid in accordance with established humanitarian principles. She argued for an immediate ceasefire, calling for an end to hostilities and the release of hostages, while expressing concern that more declarations from Israel could worsen the plight of civilians in Gaza.

The escalation of tensions and humanitarian crises in the region has called for urgent dialogue and diplomatic engagement, as conflicts continue to have severe impacts on the local population.
