Taiwan has unveiled its latest naval innovation with the launch of the “Danjiang,” a self-designed corvette featuring advanced stealth capabilities. This vessel represents a significant development in Taiwan’s maritime defense strategy. The Danjiang is the first of a new class of five upgraded stealth ships and is expected to join the Taiwanese navy by next year, pending final testing.

The corvette measures 60.4 meters (198 feet) in length and 14 meters (46 feet) in width, utilizing a catamaran hull design to enhance both stability and maneuverability. It is capable of reaching speeds of 30 knots (approximately 55 kilometers per hour or 34.5 miles per hour) and has a notable operational range of over 1,800 nautical miles (around 2,071 miles or 3,334 kilometers).

Equipped with an arsenal that includes various anti-ship and anti-aircraft missiles along with an automatic cannon, the Danjiang is designed to effectively engage aerial and maritime targets concurrently, enhancing its combat versatility.

This launch is part of Taiwan’s broader initiative to modernize its naval fleet and strengthen its defense capabilities amid escalating tensions in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly due to China’s ongoing claims over the island. The threats from China have prompted a vigilant response from Taipei, including recent military exercises to prepare for potential conflicts.

Earlier this month, Taiwan announced its annual “Han Kuang” military exercises, set to take place from July 9 to 18. These drills will prominently feature newly-acquired U.S.-made rocket systems, simulating scenarios of a possible Chinese attack. This year’s exercises involve active-duty personnel along with the largest mobilization of reservists in history, totaling 22,000 participants. The upcoming drills are expected to be the longest since their inception in 1984 when Taiwan was still under martial law.

In another significant step for its military capabilities, Taiwan commenced sea trials of its first domestically built submarine in June at the southern port of Kaohsiung. This submarine is part of a larger initiative launched in 2016 to construct a fleet of eight submarines, with the sea trials commencing nearly two years after its initial unveiling.

The introduction of the Danjiang corvette, along with other defense developments, underscores Taiwan’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and enhancing its military preparedness against potential threats.
