Taiwan's Military Investigates Explosion of Patriot PAC-2 Missile During Drill

Taiwan’s military is currently investigating a disturbing incident involving the explosion of a Patriot PAC-2 missile during a routine precision munitions drill along the southeastern coast of the island. The drill, which took place in Jiupeng, Pingtung County, was closely monitored by local media, which reported that one of the two launched missiles detonated approximately four seconds post-launch.

During this exercise, the second missile launched successfully without any reported issues. Despite the explosive incident, the military has not publicly commented on the circumstances surrounding the explosion. An anonymous source indicated that the cause remains unclear at this time.

While the Air Force Command Headquarters refrained from addressing the explosion directly, they did confirm that the annual Sea and Air Precision Ammunition Firing Exercises have concluded. According to their release, all types of ammunition were deployed according to established scenarios, and any unexpected situations that occurred were managed according to standard operational procedures. Additionally, a military evaluation committee has commenced a review of the drill’s results.

This incident is not isolated; Taiwan’s Patriot missile systems have been involved in several notable incidents over recent years. In 2024, a military truck carrying Patriot air defense equipment overturned in southern Taiwan, resulting in injuries to at least two personnel. The prior year saw another challenge, where a Taiwanese Air Force official acknowledged that a Patriot PAC-3 missile failed during a live-fire drill. Subsequent clarification from US manufacturer Lockheed Martin indicated that this missile was not a PAC-3 model.

Taiwan first introduced these Patriot missiles in 1996, as part of its expanding air defense capabilities. The recent explosion raises questions regarding the reliability of these advanced systems and their operational safety in the context of training drills. As the investigation unfolds, the military’s findings may have significant implications for Taiwan’s defense strategies moving forward.
