Teledyne FLIR, a leading provider of thermal imaging and surveillance solutions, has announced a significant contract valued at $7.8 million aimed at enhancing Saudi Arabia’s defense capabilities. The deal involves the delivery of advanced long-range thermal surveillance systems, specifically the next-generation Lightweight Vehicle Surveillance System (LVSS), alongside essential support services. This contract has been established with the Middle East Task Company (METCO), designated for a prominent military entity within the Kingdom.
As part of this agreement, Teledyne FLIR will not only supply the surveillance systems but will also provide mission support equipment and comprehensive training to ensure that the Saudi forces are thoroughly prepared to effectively operate the LVSS. Stan Crawford, the Senior Director of Business Development for the Middle East at Teledyne FLIR, highlighted the importance of the LVSS in bolstering the security of borders, critical infrastructure, and coastline areas. He expressed pride in collaborating with METCO in supporting a vital mission to safeguard the nation.
While the specific number of LVSS units to be delivered to Riyadh has not been disclosed, the system’s reputation for mobility and efficiency is expected to make it a valuable asset for the Saudi military. The LVSS is designed as a compact, mobile surveillance solution that can be effortlessly transported in the bed of a standard commercial pickup truck, reflecting modern demands for versatility in military operations.
An innovative feature of the LVSS is its integration of the TacFLIR 380HD long-range thermal imaging system with Ranger R20SS radar, which allows for the detection and identification of numerous targets—up to 500—at distances exceeding 10 miles (16 kilometers). Furthermore, the system’s portability enables a single operator to deploy and set it up in less than 30 seconds, making it suitable for rapid response scenarios.
With a 16-foot (5-meter) mast that elevates above obstructions such as trees, the LVSS furnishes an unobstructed aerial view for surveillance, thus enhancing situational awareness in various operational contexts. Teledyne FLIR emphasizes that the LVSS is tailored for missions that require rapid deployment, flexibility, and mobility, effectively addressing threats from both air and ground sources, which typically encompass the protection of critical infrastructure, military bases, and personnel.
