In a significant development for both nations, Turkey has finalized a deal to export 48 fighter jets to Indonesia, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced. The agreement reflects Turkey’s growing influence in the global defense sector, particularly with its innovative military technology, including the renowned Bayraktar drones, which have become key contributors to the nation’s export activities.
Erdogan revealed the details of the agreement via social media platform X, stating that the Kaan fighter jets will be produced domestically in Turkey before being delivered to Indonesia. The contract, valued at approximately $10 billion, stipulates that the production and delivery of the jets will unfold over a decade.
A notable aspect of this deal includes a technology transfer to Indonesia, enabling the Southeast Asian nation to enhance its own defense capabilities. Erdogan emphasized that Indonesia’s local resources will be utilized in the production process of the Kaan jets, showcasing a commitment to collaboration and partnership between the two countries.
The Kaan fighter jet, developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), represents a significant advancement in Turkey’s military technology. The fifth-generation fighter made its maiden flight in February 2024 and soon after was equipped with engines similar to those of the widely used F-16 aircraft. Turkey, however, has plans to integrate a domestically produced engine for the Kaan jets in the future.
The defense industry has been a focal point for the Turkish economy, achieving remarkable growth in export revenues. In 2024, revenues soared to $7.1 billion, marking an impressive increase of $1.6 billion compared to the previous year, further establishing Turkey’s position as a crucial player in the global defense landscape.
