Two Lashkar-e-Taiba Terrorists Surrender in Shopian Amid Ongoing Crackdown

In a significant development in the ongoing fight against terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, two hybrid terrorists linked to the banned group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) have surrendered during a joint operation in the Baskuchan area of Shopian. This operation was executed by a coordinated team from the Special Operations Group (SOG) Shopian, 44 Rashtriya Rifles, and the 178 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), driven by specific intelligence inputs.

The individuals who surrendered have been identified as Irfan Bashir and Uzair Salam. In the course of the operation, security forces recovered substantial weaponry, including two AK-56 rifles, four magazines, 102 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition, two hand grenades, and two pouches. An FIR has been filed, and authorities are conducting thorough investigations to ascertain the extent of the duo’s involvement in terror activities.

This incident highlights the ongoing crackdown on terrorism in the region, which has intensified following a recent spike in violent incidents. Notably, on May 16, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Zone VK Birdi reported the neutralization of six terrorists in separate operations across Kelar, Shopian, and Tral.

The surge in security operations has been a direct response to a deadly terror attack that occurred on April 22 in Pahalgam, resulting in the deaths of 26 people, including a Nepali national. This tragedy prompted the Indian Armed Forces to launch Operation Sindoor on May 7, aimed at targeting terrorist infrastructure within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The operation reportedly eliminated over 100 terrorists associated with various groups, including Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen, during cross-border strikes.

Officials have reiterated their unwavering commitment to dismantling the terror networks operating in the region. The recent collaborative efforts among the Army, police, and paramilitary forces have yielded notable successes, reflecting a determined and strategic approach to countering terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. As investigations continue, the security apparatus remains vigilant in its pursuit of peace and stability in the area.
