In a strategic development aimed at enhancing defense capabilities in Europe, UAE’s EDGE Group and Spain’s Indra Group have announced their collaboration to establish a new defense manufacturing entity in Spain. This joint venture will focus on the production of loitering munitions and smart weapon technologies, responding to the increasing demand for advanced defense solutions across the continent.
The new company is set to be located in León, Spain, where it will harness EDGE’s advanced systems expertise alongside Indra’s established industrial capabilities. Indra plans to invest between 15 to 20 million euros (approximately $17.4 to $23 million) to enhance drone manufacturing capacity at the facility. This initiative comes at a pivotal time, as European nations are keen to secure their supply chains for crucial defense technologies and reduce dependence on external sources for sophisticated weapon systems.
The formation of this manufacturing entity underscores EDGE’s ongoing commitment to expanding its footprint beyond the UAE. Over the past few years, EDGE has made significant strides in establishing institutional partnerships and operational presences in various countries. In 2023, the company acquired a majority stake in Milrem Robotics, a Tallinn-based firm specializing in robotics and autonomous systems, marking one of its notable entries into the European defense market.
Additionally, EDGE secured a 50 percent share in Brazilian defense firm SIATT, which specializes in smart weapons and missile technologies. By September 2025, EDGE is expected to inaugurate a new headquarters and production facility in Brazil, further amplifying its research and development and manufacturing capabilities. This facility aims to support missile systems, including anti-ship and coastal surveillance technologies, and is projected to create hundreds of local jobs.
In its efforts to expand its presence in Europe, EDGE also acquired the unmanned aerial systems manufacturer ANAVIA in Switzerland. This acquisition includes the establishment of a new headquarters and UAS prototyping center in Bilten, enhancing its international network of partnerships that facilitate co-development, technology transfer, and localized production.
Through these initiatives, EDGE is not only bolstering its own capabilities but also contributing to the enhancement of European defense industries, positioning itself as a key player in the global defense landscape.
