In a significant development in the European defense landscape, the UAE’s state-owned company EDGE Group has entered into a technology transfer agreement with Spanish defense contractor EM&E Group to manufacture the Ferox 6×6 armored vehicle in Spain. This agreement marks a strategic collaboration aimed at advancing defense capabilities in Europe, particularly in light of the ongoing global demands for enhanced military readiness.
Under this collaboration, EM&E Group, based in Madrid, will now commence the domestic assembly of the Ferox vehicle, which is built upon EDGE’s proprietary Jais six-wheel Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) system. This initiative supports Spain’s broader strategy to enhance its military export capabilities within the European market while reinforcing industrial ties within the NATO framework.
The manufacturing operations, alongside associated integrations of the Ferox armored vehicle, will be conducted at EM&E’s newly established facilities in Linares, Jaén. This localized production aligns with the objectives of both EDGE and EM&E to bolster industrial independence in ground defense systems throughout Europe. It also aims to develop capabilities that meet standards set by both the European Union and NATO.
Khaled Al Zaabi, president of platforms and systems at EDGE, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating that the transfer of technology is a testament to their commitment to modernizing European land forces. The goal is to establish partnerships within the European defense sector that are mutually advantageous, enhancing the mission readiness of ground forces with state-of-the-art armored vehicle solutions.
EM&E first unveiled the Ferox in Madrid during a presentation in May. The vehicle has been described as robust and resilient, designed to withstand attacks from enemy shells, landmine blasts, and improvised explosive devices. Similar in design to the Jais vehicle produced in Abu Dhabi, the Ferox measures approximately 7 meters (23 feet) in length, weighs around 27,000 kilograms (59,525 pounds), and can accommodate up to 11 troops.
Performing with an engine capable of producing 600 horsepower, the Ferox can reach speeds of up to 100 kilometers (62 miles) per hour, complemented by a range of 700 kilometers (435 miles). Additionally, it has the capability to be outfitted with a remote-controlled weapon station, which can integrate a machine gun and anti-tank guided missiles, enhancing its effectiveness in various combat scenarios.
This agreement not only strengthens the defense capabilities of both the UAE and Spain but also represents a critical step towards a more integrated and self-sufficient defense industry within Europe.
