Admiral R. Hari Kumar recently stated that the Indian Navy is considering the purchase of a second Vikrant-class aircraft carrier with the same displacement as the first, which is 45,000 tonnes. The goal of this concept is to capitalize on the skilled workforce generated during the construction of the first aircraft carrier, while simultaneously planning for a larger aircraft carrier in the future.
New Upgrades in IAC-II
The second Vikrant-class aircraft carrier, according to Admiral R. Hari Kumar, would undergo design upgrades to accommodate next-generation systems such as unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAV) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) on its flight deck for maritime operations. The Indian Navy is investigating the purchase of deck-based unmanned strike combat vehicles based on the Ghataak platform, as well as HALE class UAVs capable of operating from aircraft carriers.

INS Vishal – IAC-2
INS Vishal, also known as Indigenous Aircraft Carrier 2 (IAC-2), is a projected aircraft carrier for the Indian Navy being built by Cochin Shipyard Limited. It will be India’s second aircraft carrier, following the INS Vikrant (IAC-1). The suggested design for the second carrier class will be a new design with considerable differences from Vikrant, such as increased size and displacement. A CATOBAR Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) system is also being considered.
