Ukraine Adopts 'Hromylo Optic' Drones for Enhanced Combat Capability

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence has officially adopted the “Hromylo Optic” unmanned aerial system (UAS) for deployment within its armed forces. This domestically manufactured drone has previously been utilized in combat across various configurations, showcasing remarkable effectiveness in targeting enemy equipment and fortified positions.

To align with operational demands, the manufacturer has developed a larger variant of the Hromylo Optic, featuring a 10-inch (24-centimeter) frame. This upgrade significantly enhances the drone’s payload capacity, allowing it to carry heavier explosives capable of neutralizing heavily armored tanks. The Hromylo Optic is equipped with a fiber-optic guidance system, which renders it less susceptible to electronic jamming—an increasing concern on modern battlefields. Additionally, the drone supports multiple video modes, including daylight, low-light, and thermal imaging, facilitating target identification at any hour.

Ukrainian military units have already begun deploying this advanced system in the field, achieving successful strikes against tanks, armored personnel carriers, and enemy firing positions. Deputy Minister of Defence Valerii Churkin emphasized the swift response of domestic manufacturers to the challenges faced on the front lines, stating, “Those who are quickest to implement innovative solutions gain the advantage.” He urged vigilance against overestimating the enemy’s capabilities, stressing the necessity to remain ahead of technological advancements.

In a broader strategy to bolster domestic defense capabilities and counter Russia’s military superiority, Ukraine is significantly expanding its arsenal of locally produced unmanned systems. Since the year began, nearly 40 fiber-optically guided UAS have been officially adopted, with around 15 introduced in just April. Additionally, earlier this month, Ukraine unveiled an uncrewed surface vehicle with features that include laser beam capabilities and the ability to launch drone swarms. The recent landscape also saw Ukraine conducting its largest trial of unmanned ground vehicles, with over 70 drones from 50 domestic manufacturers tested simultaneously, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s ongoing efforts to enhance its military technology.
