Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Ukraine aims to acquire a minimum of 10 Patriot missile defense systems from the United States to bolster its defenses against ongoing Russian military aggression. During a press conference in Kyiv, Zelensky disclosed that he had made this specific request to US President Donald Trump, who assured him that efforts would be made to facilitate the purchase.
Zelensky expressed his determination, stating, “Ukraine is ready to purchase at least 10 systems. I told President Trump about this minimum during our phone conversation.” He noted that while Trump pledged to look into the matter, he had yet to receive further details on the progress of the request.
The Patriot missile defense system is designed to intercept and destroy threats such as short-range ballistic missiles, advanced aircraft, and cruise missiles. Its introduction into Ukraine’s defense arsenal is viewed as critical, especially given the country’s escalating conflict with Russia. The need for enhanced air defense capabilities has become increasingly urgent as Ukrainian officials emphasize the potential for a significant shortage amidst relentless daily attacks.
The Patriot systems represent a substantial investment for Ukraine, with the Center for Strategic and International Studies estimating the total cost of the acquisition at approximately $1.1 billion. This figure encompasses around $400 million for the systems themselves and an additional $690 million allocated for the necessary missiles.
As the situation evolves, Ukraine continues to seek greater support from its allies to strengthen its military resources in the face of the ongoing crisis.
