In a groundbreaking development, Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Force has introduced a sophisticated uncrewed surface vehicle (USV) known as the “Alligator-9.” This innovative naval system is designed to enhance Ukraine’s maritime capabilities and features the ability to both fire laser beams and deploy swarms of drones to engage enemy forces effectively.
The Alligator-9 stands out as a multi-role platform with three distinct configurations. It can launch between six to ten Alligator-5 ToD (torpedo drones), aimed at striking enemy vessels, or it can deploy three to five Alligator-5 electronic warfare (EW) drones. The latter serves multiple strategic functions, including electronic warfare operations, reconnaissance missions, mine clearance, and navigation support.
A notable feature of the Alligator-9 is its integration of the Tryzub laser system. This advanced weaponry reportedly possesses the capability to neutralize a variety of aerial threats, as affirmed by the defense analysis outlet, Militarnyi. While specific details regarding the vehicle’s dimensions, speed, and operational range remain undisclosed, it is characterized as a modular platform, adaptable for various mission profiles.
The Tryzub laser system, which Kyiv initially announced in December 2024 as being deployed on the battlefield, showcases remarkable efficiency against aerial threats. The laser affixed to the Alligator-9 can reportedly obliterate attack drones, bombs, and both cruise and ballistic missiles from a distance of up to 3,000 meters (approximately 9,842 feet). Moreover, it can engage aircraft and reconnaissance drones up to 5,000 meters (around 16,404 feet) away. Impressively, the USV is also capable of using its laser beam to disrupt or disable enemy airborne targets at ranges extending up to 10,000 meters (approximately 32,808 feet).
The unveiling of the Alligator-9 marks a significant advancement in uncrewed naval technology and underscores Ukraine’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology in its defense strategy.
