Ukraine's ‘Sea Baby’ Naval Drone Grows Teeth, Now With Expanded Firepower

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has unveiled enhanced iterations of its “Sea Baby” unmanned surface platform, showcasing remarkable advancements during the latest trials conducted in the Black Sea. This latest development highlights Ukraine’s ongoing commitment to bolstering its naval capabilities in the face of ongoing challenges.

Two new weaponized variants of the “Sea Baby” were presented, each designed for specific strategic advantages in maritime engagements. One variant is equipped with a gyro-stabilized machine gun that features automatic tracking and target identification capabilities, significantly improving its efficiency in combat scenarios. The second variant is armed with a multiple launch rocket system capable of firing up to ten Grad munitions, thereby increasing its firepower and versatility in naval operations.

Both versions of the unmanned surface platform boast impressive operational parameters. They are designed to travel over 1,500 kilometers (approximately 932 miles) while still carrying substantial payloads of up to 2,000 kilograms (around 4,409 pounds). Their design includes reinforced engines and a modernized navigation suite, enhancing their reliability and maneuverability in various maritime environments.

This innovative leap in drone technology reflects Ukraine’s strategic efforts to enhance its naval operations, underscoring the ongoing evolution of unmanned systems in modern warfare. With the “Sea Baby,” Ukraine aims to augment its capabilities and stand as a formidable presence in the Black Sea.
