A senior UN official expressed deep concern over increasing military threats against Iran, particularly those articulated by US President Donald Trump, suggesting these threats contribute to an already unstable environment in the country. The remarks come amid significant anti-government protests that have erupted across Iran, marking some of the most notable civil unrest in the nation’s recent history. Although the demonstrations have subsided due to government repression and an internet blackout lasting a week, the impact of the civil discontent remains palpable.
Warnings from the United States have escalated, particularly regarding the impending death penalties for individuals arrested during the protests. In response, Washington’s envoy to the UN affirmed that all options for confronting Iran remain “on the table.” This sentiment was echoed by Martha Pobee, the UN Assistant Secretary-General, who addressed the UN Security Council, stating, “We note with alarm various public statements suggesting possible military strikes on Iran. This external dimension adds volatility to an already combustible situation.” She emphasized the necessity of preventive measures to avert further deterioration in the region.
During the discussion, Iran’s representative, Gholamhossein Darzi, condemned the US for allegedly manipulating the peaceful protests for its own geopolitical agenda. He accused President Trump of attempting to “reignite unrest” within Iran, further complicating the delicate situation.
Highlighting the collective sentiment of the Iranian people, Iranian-American journalist Masih Alinejad, who had been invited to speak by Washington, asserted that there is a united front among Iranians against the clerical government. She expressed that millions took to the streets to demand an end to the government’s financial support for groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthi fighters, voicing frustration over domestic policies that they believe prioritize foreign affairs over local needs.
In a related development, two individuals were sentenced to 25 years in prison by a US judge for allegedly plotting to kill Alinejad, demonstrating the tensions that have sprung from her outspoken criticism of the Iranian regime.
Alinejad noted her appreciation for President Trump’s earlier offers of support for Iranian civilians facing violent repression from state security forces. She has emerged as a prominent advocate for challenges to the Iranian government while residing in the United States.
US Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, reinforced the commitment of the United States to support the Iranian people amid ongoing government oppression. He asserted, “The level of repression that the Iranian regime has unleashed on its own citizens has repercussions for international peace and security,” underscoring the global implications of the unrest within Iran.
