The US State Department has cleared a significant foreign military sale to Israel, approving a $180 million deal that involves the provision of engines for the Israel Defense Forces’ Eitan 8×8 armored personnel carriers. This acquisition will include the 8V199TE21-D power pack engines, which are developed by Rolls-Royce, along with necessary equipment to support the fleet.
The deal encompasses additional elements like technical assistance, engineering services, and logistical support, all aimed at fortifying Israel’s military capabilities. In announcing the approval, Washington emphasized the importance of this procurement as it aligns with its strategic interests in bolstering Israel’s self-defense capabilities in the volatile Middle Eastern region.
Officials from the US government assured that the transaction would not disrupt the existing military balance in the area. A statement from the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency highlighted that the proposed sale is intended to bolster Israel’s ability to defend its borders, vital infrastructure, and population centers from emerging threats.
Furthermore, the deal is designed to enhance interoperability with US military forces, underscoring the ongoing commitment of the United States to support Israel’s security and modernization of its armed forces. It was also noted that Israel will face no challenges in integrating this advanced equipment into its existing military framework.
The Eitan armored personnel carrier is a domestically-developed Israeli system that began its service with the military in 2023, shortly before the intensification of conflict with Palestine. This advanced armored vehicle measures approximately 8 meters (26 feet) in length and is typically operated by a three-member crew responsible for maneuvers, command, and weapon controls.
The Eitan can accommodate up to nine soldiers and is equipped with a remote weapon system featuring a heavy machine gun and a mounted support gun. With a robust engine delivering at least 750 horsepower, the vehicle achieves a top speed of 90 kilometers (56 miles) per hour and boasts an impressive operational range of 1,000 kilometers (621 miles).
This military enhancement could significantly influence Israel’s defense posture, as the Eitan’s advanced systems are expected to support the IDF in addressing both current and future challenges in the region.
