The US Army has secured a significant contract with BAE Systems, valued at $162 million, for the production of major lightweight howitzer structures for the M777 cannon. This agreement marks a critical step in revitalizing the manufacturing of this essential weapon system, particularly during a time when these howitzers have proven pivotal in ongoing operations across Europe.
BAE Systems has already commenced work on the project, leveraging its supply chain capabilities both in the US and the UK to fabricate the titanium structures that are integral to the M777. The first major components are set to be manufactured at BAE’s state-of-the-art artillery development and production facility located in Sheffield, UK, as well as through its established US supply chain. Initial deliveries of the completed howitzers are slated to begin in 2026.
John Borton, Vice President of BAE Systems Weapons Systems UK, emphasized the importance of this contract, stating that it signifies a major milestone in the resurgence of M777 production. He highlighted the critical role that these artillery systems have played in supporting NATO allies, especially given their status as the only battle-proven 155mm lightweight howitzer globally. Borton reiterated the company’s commitment to enhancing the M777’s capabilities through ongoing technical advancements, improvements in long-range precision guided munitions, and enhanced mobility options.
The revival of interest in the M777 howitzer follows its recent deployment and success in the Ukraine conflict. Various nations, including the US, Australia, and Canada, have provided around 200 units to Ukraine, showcasing its effectiveness on the battlefield. Weighing approximately 4 tons, which is less than half that of traditional 155 mm towed guns, the M777 is designed for versatility, allowing for rapid towing by tactical vehicles, sling-loading by helicopters, or transport via aircraft such as the Lockheed C-130 Hercules and C-5 Galaxy.
The M777 cannon is designed to support a diverse range of both guided and unguided ammunition, including the sophisticated Excalibur shells developed by Raytheon and BAE. Since its induction into service in 2005, the US military has procured an estimated 1,000 units of the M777 for use by the Army and Marine Corps, with additional operators including the armed forces of Canada, Australia, India, and Ukraine.
This contract and the renewed focus on production continue to affirm the M777’s status as a cornerstone of modern artillery, ensuring that it remains at the forefront of battlefield technology in the years to come.
