A three-member delegation from the United States Army, led by Colonel Matthew Kohler, recently completed a significant three-day visit to the College of Military Engineering (CME) in Pune, Maharashtra, as part of the Subject Matter Expert Exchange Programme. The visit, which took place from May 13 to 15, aimed to enhance military cooperation between India and the United States, focusing specifically on Counter-Improvised Explosive Device (Counter-IED) operations and Unexploded Ordnance Disposal.
During their stay, the US delegates engaged in intensive discussions with Lieutenant General AK Ramesh, the Commandant of CME, along with senior faculty members. The agenda revolved around sharing operational strategies, technical expertise, and best practices related to modern security challenges posed by IEDs and unexploded ordnance. These discussions are particularly pertinent in the context of asymmetric warfare, where such threats have become increasingly prevalent.
The College of Military Engineering, located on the Old Mumbai-Pune Highway in Dapodi, has been instrumental in military engineering education in India since its establishment in 1943. It specializes in training officers in crucial areas such as combat engineering and explosives handling, which are vital for national defense preparedness.
This exchange program highlights the strengthening ties and cooperation in defense between India and the United States. As the US has emerged as India’s largest partner in joint military initiatives, such exchanges play a vital role in reinforcing mutual trust and operational compatibility. Both nations have reaffirmed their commitment to tackling global security challenges, particularly in counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency, and safe disposal of explosives.
As part of the visit, a ceremonial exchange of mementos took place, symbolizing the deepening bonds between the two armed forces. A formal gathering on the CME campus fostered a spirit of camaraderie and a shared mission among Indian and US personnel. The Indian Army’s Army Training Command highlighted the strategic significance of these professional exchanges in establishing long-term defense partnerships.
This visit is another notable milestone in the broader spectrum of India-US military collaboration, reflecting alignment in strategic, technical, and operational areas. As both nations continue to work together on various regional and global defense challenges, these exchanges are essential for building expertise and ensuring joint readiness against emerging threats.
