US Army Enhances Mobility with $53 Million Contract for Common Bridge Transporters

The U.S. Army is enhancing its operational mobility with a new $53 million contract awarded to Oshkosh Defense for the procurement of Common Bridge Transporters (CBTs). These specialized vehicles are engineered to transport, launch, and retrieve bridge bays and bridge boats, facilitating the ability of military units to cross rivers and other obstacles with enhanced efficiency.

CBTs play a crucial role in ensuring that forces can maintain their momentum and supply lines, especially in challenging or contested environments. The design of these vehicles allows them to operate effectively under threat, reinforcing the Army’s tactical capabilities. Pat Williams, Chief Programs Officer for Oshkosh Defense, underscored the importance of dependable mobility for soldiers, particularly during conflict situations when maintaining supply and movement is vital.

This initiative is part of the broader Family of Heavy Tactical Vehicles (FHTV) V program. Under the terms of the 2024 contract, with an estimated total of $1.54 billion over a seven-year span, Oshkosh Defense will deliver both new and recapitalized heavy tactical vehicles and trailers to the Army through 2031.

The FHTV V program encompasses a diverse lineup of vehicles, including the Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck, the Palletized Load System along with its trailers, and the Heavy Equipment Transporter. These platforms are crucial for providing the Army with enhanced mobility, significant payload capacity, and improved protection for combat formations operating in complex terrains and various conditions.

Furthermore, the contract aims to support fleet upgrades and modernization efforts. This includes implementing advanced driver-assistance systems, condition-based maintenance protocols, and various technologies that contribute to increased efficiency, enhanced safety, and prolonged vehicle lifespan. Through these enhancements, the Army seeks to ensure that its fighting forces are better prepared and equipped for future operations.
