The US Army and General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems have inaugurated a state-of-the-art load, assemble, and pack (LAP) facility in Camden, Arkansas, dedicated to the production of 155mm high-explosive artillery projectiles. This cutting-edge facility is designed to oversee the final stage of ammunition production, operating with two active lines expected to yield approximately 50,000 units monthly.
The new facility will incorporate advanced automation and digital quality tracking systems, setting a higher standard for manufacturing technologies in the defense sector. Additionally, it will utilize a next-generation air-cooling system for explosive curing, a significant development aimed at reducing water consumption compared to traditional cooling methods. Pat Mason, a senior official from Acquisition, Logistics and Technology, emphasized the success of this project as a result of strong collaboration among industry partners, local communities, and government entities at various levels.
To bolster the local economy, the facility is projected to create around 185 jobs in the Camden region. The US Army is intensifying its production of 155mm projectiles, with ambitions to ramp up monthly output to 100,000 rounds. This increase follows a substantial surge in munitions production since 2022, driven by global defense demands and an objective to enhance the military’s firepower readiness.
Originally setting a production goal of 80,000 rounds in 2023, the Army’s strategy concentrated on providing crucial support to Ukraine in its effort against Russian aggression. This goal prompted the establishment of a partnership with ammunition manufacturer Olin Winchester to construct an additional production facility in Missouri for the Next Generation Squad Weapon. Moreover, BAE Systems has joined forces with Hanwha Defense to implement upgrades at the Radford Ammunition Plant, which produces a variety of munitions, including missile propellants, explosives, and naval weaponry.
As the US Army continues to adapt to evolving global security challenges, the Camden facility is poised to play a pivotal role in strengthening the nation’s artillery capabilities and supporting allied forces.
