US Coast Guard Commissions First Sentinel-Class Fast Response Cutter in Kodiak, Alaska

The U.S. Coast Guard has officially welcomed its first Sentinel-class fast response cutter to be based in Kodiak, Alaska, marking a significant milestone in maritime security operations. The vessel, named the USCGC John Witherspoon (WPC-1158), is the 58th addition to the Coast Guard’s Sentinel fleet, which plays a crucial role in safeguarding American waters through various missions, including maritime defense, law enforcement, environmental protection, and emergency response.

The USCGC John Witherspoon is expected to bolster the Coast Guard’s operational capabilities in the region. Following its arrival in Kodiak, two more Sentinel-class cutters, the Earl Cunningham (WPC-1159) and Frederick Mann (WPC-1160), are scheduled to join the fleet later this year.

Named in honor of the first African-American commander of a U.S. Coast Guard medium-class cutter, the Witherspoon carries a legacy of exemplary service. The namesake received notable accolades throughout his career, including a Meritorious Service Medal, two Commendation Medals, and a prestigious award from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) for his dedication and impact on the community. His legacy inspires the Captain John G. Witherspoon Inspirational Leadership Award, honoring officers and servicemen for their exceptional leadership.

The Sentinel-class cutters, developed by Bollinger Shipyards, feature a design that spans 47 meters (154 feet) in length and are capable of accommodating more than 20 personnel alongside a small support boat. These vessels are equipped with a 25-millimeter shipboard weapon system and various crew-served machine guns, alongside advanced technological systems for surface and aerial search and navigation, ensuring they are well-prepared for diverse threats and operational demands.

Powered by two robust 5,800-horsepower MTU engines, the John Witherspoon boasts an impressive top speed exceeding 28 knots (52 kilometers/32 miles per hour), making it agile and effective in various maritime conditions. As the fleet continues to expand in Kodiak, the U.S. Coast Guard aims to enhance its mission readiness and response capabilities, further securing American waters and ensuring the safety of those who travel within them.
