US Department of Defense Awards $15.4 Million Contract to MDT Armor for Tactical Vehicles

The US Department of Defense has recently awarded a significant contract worth $15.4 million to MDT Armor for the provision of tactical vehicles and parts designated for military use. This contract is particularly notable as it includes MDT’s renowned “David” and “Tiger” armored vehicles, which are currently operational in several countries, including Israel, Mexico, the Philippines, Chad, and Ecuador.

The agreement outlines that work will be conducted in Auburn, Alabama, and is projected to conclude by June 2026. MDT Armor operates as the American branch of Shladot, an Israeli military contractor based in Kiryat Ata, Haifa, which adds an international component to this partnership.

Focusing on the vehicles themselves, the Tiger model is a 6-meter (20-foot) light-protected vehicle that leverages the robust designs of commercial Dodge RAM and Ford F550 heavy-duty trucks. This vehicle is designed with multiple operational features, including five doors and a roof hatch that enable quick troop and weapon deployment. It provides seating for up to 12 personnel while also allowing for customization of the cabin to meet various mission requirements. The Tiger is equipped with Standard III NATO armor and boasts a powerful 330-horsepower diesel engine, achieving a top speed of 100 kilometers (62 miles) per hour.

On the other hand, the David armored vehicle presents a more compact design, modeled after the Toyota Land Cruiser and Hilux platforms. It measures up to 5 meters (17 feet) depending on how it is configured for specific user needs. The David can be fitted with three to five doors to facilitate equipment and personnel movements, supporting up to eight passengers within its chassis. Additionally, it features a roof turret suitable for either manual or remote weapon systems, alongside Standard II NATO armor. The vehicle is powered by a turbocharged intercooled diesel engine with 148 horsepower, capable of speeds exceeding 90 kilometers (56 miles) per hour.

The contract highlights the growing reliance on technologically advanced and versatile military vehicles in modern warfare and peacekeeping missions. MDT Armor’s vehicles are crafted to address diverse mission needs while ensuring the safety and mobility of personnel deployed in contemporary operational environments. The collaboration between MDT and the US Defense Department marks a significant step towards enhancing tactical capabilities for American forces.
