US Department of Defense Awards Boeing $38.7 Million Contract for P-8A Poseidon Software Updates

The US Department of Defense has announced a $38.7-million contract with Boeing to provide essential mission software updates for the Republic of Korea’s P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft fleet. This initiative is part of a broader framework established in a 2021 ordering agreement, aimed at supporting various aircraft systems and their ongoing sustainment.

The contract focuses on the development and installation of the updated Tactical Open Mission Software (TOMS) package, specifically TOMS version 105K. The upgrades promise to enhance overall system performance while addressing parts shortages that have been affecting older components within the fleet. Additionally, the new software will introduce advanced operational capabilities, such as Multi-Static Active Coherent processing, which significantly improves submarine detection and tracking capabilities.

Importantly, the new software will facilitate the integration of the Harpoon II missile, thus providing enhanced options for both anti-ship and land-attack missions, marking a strategic boost in the aircraft’s operational versatility.

Boeing has designed TOMS with an open systems architecture, enabling easier updates and the integration of emerging technologies, thus supporting the long-term modernization efforts of the P-8A fleet. The primary work related to this contract will occur in Seattle, with supplementary activities planned in California, Missouri, Maryland, and Pohang, South Korea. The project is slated for completion by January 2029, with coordination managed through the US Naval Air Systems Command based in Patuxent River.

This contract with the Republic of Korea follows a series of recent Defense projects undertaken by Boeing. Notably, the company is involved in a $2.4-billion initiative to facilitate rapid prototyping for the troubled E-7A Wedgetail program for the US Air Force. Earlier this year, Boeing was also tasked with upgrading the infrared countermeasure systems for the C-17 Globemaster III airlifters utilized by Canadian and Australian forces.

Additionally, Boeing secured a contract exceeding $100 million focused on replenishing guided munitions for the US Air Force’s B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, a move aimed at restoring military inventory following impactful strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. In a further commitment to enhancing South Korea’s defense capabilities, Boeing recently won a deal worth up to $2.8 billion to modernize the country’s F-15K Slam Eagle fleet, which is modeled after the American F-15E Strike Eagle jets.

These projects underscore Boeing’s pivotal role in enhancing both US and allied military capabilities through software modernization and fleet upgrades.
