The US Department of Defense has entered into a significant contract with Firefly Aerospace to launch the Elytra Dawn space vehicle for various orbital missions. This contract is a strategic move aimed at enhancing the capabilities for space domain awareness operations, particularly in low-Earth orbit (LEO).

The Elytra Dawn will act as a sophisticated space maneuvering system, enabling a diverse range of tasks in orbit. Among its key features are advanced optical visible and infrared cameras, navigation units, and electrical payloads equipped with interface modules. These tools will bolster the vehicle’s operational capabilities, allowing for a comprehensive approach to monitoring and engagement in the increasingly critical arena of space.

Firefly Aerospace plans to utilize existing components from its successful line of launch vehicles, lunar landers, avionics, and propulsion systems to adapt the Elytra Dawn for specific mission requirements. Notably, the vehicle’s engine, dubbed Spectre, has already proven its reliability during a recent descent mission of Firefly’s lunar lander, showcasing the company’s commitment to innovation and performance in aerospace technology.
