US Strikes in Nigeria Target ISIS Using Drones on Christmas Day

US military trainers stationed in Nigeria are utilizing advanced MQ-9 “Reaper” drones for surveillance and intelligence operations, as confirmed by the Nigerian military in a statement released Saturday. These troops are based at an air facility in Bauchi state and are part of a US initiative aimed at enhancing the capabilities of Nigerian forces tackling jihadist threats.

In light of ongoing efforts to combat a persistent insurgency that has plagued Nigeria since 2009, the US has committed to augmenting intelligence-sharing frameworks and arms sales to bolster the Nigerian military’s operational strengths. The deployment of high-powered drones follows months of recorded US drone flights above Nigeria, reportedly originating from nearby Ghana in the previous year.

Major General Samaila Uba, Nigeria’s Director of Defense Information, stated that the drones are currently deployed solely for reconnaissance purposes. He emphasized, “US support is designed to enhance Nigeria’s ability to independently detect, track, and disrupt terrorist activity.” Uba highlighted the positive impacts of the partnership, mentioning improvements in intelligence sharing, operational coordination, and the overall efficacy of Nigerian-led actions against violent extremist organizations.

Both Nigeria and the United States have reiterated that the American personnel are not engaged in combat operations. However, the situation has raised questions about the future of US aerial operations in West Africa following the closure of a significant drone base in neighboring Niger, which was closed at the request of the local ruling junta.

Lieutenant General John Brennan, with US Africa Command, has stated that there are no intentions to establish a new drone base in the region despite ongoing security challenges. Late last year, the US conducted airstrikes aimed at militants from the Islamic State Sahel Province in Nigeria’s northwest, with these operations receiving approval from Nigerian authorities amid growing pressure from Washington.

US President Donald Trump has previously critiqued the Nigerian government for its inability to curtail violence, branding the situation as reflective of the “persecution” of Christians, a claim that has been met with mixed reactions from analysts who argue that the violence affects individuals of diverse faiths.

Despite these tensions, Nigeria continues to align with the US in efforts to enhance defense cooperation, signaling a mutual commitment to address security challenges faced by the nation.
