US Secretary of the Navy John Phelan Departs Amid Military Leadership Shakeup

In a surprising announcement, the Pentagon revealed that US Secretary of the Navy John Phelan would leave office “immediately,” though no reason has been given for his sudden departure. This decision comes in the wake of significant leadership changes within the military, notably following the removal of top US Army officer General Randy George and two other senior officers earlier this month. The timing of these departures is particularly concerning as the United States remains embroiled in an ongoing conflict with Iran.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed Phelan’s exit, stating in a message on X that Undersecretary Hung Cao would assume responsibilities in an acting capacity. Phelan’s abrupt departure raises questions about the current climate within the military and the administration.

Since taking office last year, President Donald Trump has presided over a series of military leadership changes. Notably, he dismissed General Charles “CQ” Brown, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, without explanation in February 2025. This move has been part of a broader trend that has seen the removal of several high-ranking military officials, including the heads of the US Navy and Coast Guard, the commander of the National Security Agency, and the vice chief of staff of the Air Force, among others.

Additionally, the chief of staff of the Air Force announced his retirement without elaboration, just two years into a four-year term, while the commander of US Southern Command also stepped down shortly into his tenure. These developments have fueled speculation regarding the motivations behind the administration’s military reshuffling.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has insisted that the president is merely selecting leaders aligned with his vision, yet concerns are mounting among Democratic lawmakers. They warn about the potential politicization of the military, a traditionally neutral institution, amid significant changes and cuts initiated by the administration.

Last year, the Pentagon implemented directives to reduce the number of active-duty four-star generals and admirals by at least 20%, alongside a 10% reduction in the overall pool of general and flag officers. These strategies further illustrate the administration’s approach to reshaping military leadership during a time of heightened tension and ongoing conflict.
