The USS Gerald R. Ford, the largest aircraft carrier in the world, has returned to the United States after a lengthy deployment spanning 326 days. This marks the longest deployment for a U.S. carrier strike group since the Vietnam War, as confirmed by the Pentagon.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was present at Norfolk, Virginia, to oversee the aircraft carrier’s return, emphasizing the significant duration and challenges faced by the crew during their time at sea.

The USS Gerald R. Ford’s deployment took it through various mission-critical areas, initially participating in operations in the Caribbean. These operations included American forces executing strikes on boats allegedly involved in drug smuggling, intervening with sanctioned tankers, and aiding in the seizure of assets linked to Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.

As tensions escalated, the carrier was dispatched to the Middle East to engage in combat operations against Iran, demonstrating its strategic role in U.S. military efforts in the region.

Throughout this extensive deployment, the carrier faced a variety of challenges. Notably, a fire broke out in a laundry room on March 12, resulting in injuries to two sailors and significant damage to approximately 100 beds. In addition to this incident, the ship also experienced substantial issues with its toilet systems while at sea, highlighting the logistical difficulties faced by the crew during their extended mission.

The return of the USS Gerald R. Ford is seen as a significant milestone, not only for the vessel and its crew but for the broader scope of U.S. military engagement in various operational theaters.
