Uttar Pradesh Police Investigate Assault of Army Officer by Sub-Inspector

The Uttar Pradesh Police have initiated an investigation regarding a serious incident involving a police sub-inspector accused of assaulting a serving Indian Army officer in Lucknow. This alarming altercation reportedly took place on June 22 near the PGI police station area, raising substantial concern and condemnation from military authorities.

The accusation stems from a complaint lodged by Lieutenant Colonel Anand Prakash Suman, who is currently assigned to the NCC Directorate in Bihar and Jharkhand. According to his account, the confrontation occurred at the Telibagh intersection when he encountered a policeman driving on the wrong side of the road. Lt Col Suman alleges that after he rolled down his car window to address the situation, the officer responded by verbally abusing him and subsequently slapped him without provocation.

In the aftermath of the incident, an FIR was filed against the officer under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, including provisions related to assault and abusive behavior. Law enforcement has begun reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity to gather additional evidence for the ongoing investigation.

The Surya Command of the Indian Army publicly expressed their support for Lt Col Suman, emphasizing that they are taking this misconduct with “utmost seriousness.” They confirmed that senior Army officials, including Major General Salil Seth, the General Officer Commanding for the Madhya Uttar Pradesh Sub Area, and the Station Commander, recently met with Lucknow Police Commissioner Amrendra K Sengar to advocate for a fair and swift inquiry into the matter.

“The Indian Army stands resolutely with its personnel and expects prompt and exemplary action,” the Surya Command declared in a statement on their official social media account.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Rishabh Runwal highlighted that the case is being prioritized in the investigation. “All aspects of the incident are being looked into, and further action will be taken based on the investigation findings,” he informed local media.

This incident has intensified discussions surrounding civil-military relations in India, prompting calls for greater accountability and transparency from law enforcement officials. As the investigation unfolds, the Army and police agencies are under scrutiny to ensure appropriate actions are taken to uphold the integrity of both institutions.
