A massive gas leakage in LG Polymers Company at RR Venkatapuram in Gopalapatnam area of Visakhapatnam.

  • A massive gas leakage took place around 3-4 am on Thursday.
  • The plant was shut for the last 40 days owing to the lockdown.
  • According to reports, there were arrangements to reopen the plant from today and then the incident took place.
  • Styrene is a colorless liquid gas that evaporates easily.
  • It is widely used to make plastics and rubber.
  • Styrene gas can be quickly spread in the air.
  • Short term exposure results in mucous membrane irritation and eye irritation and gastrointestinal effects. When inhaled, it mainly affects the upper respiratory tract.
  • Chronic exposure to styrene in humans results in effects on the central nervous system resulting in headache, fatigue, weakness, depression, CSN dysfunction and loss of hearing and balance besides concentration problems.
  • The immediate neighborhood has been evacuated (5000 people)
  • NDRF has been called for immediate response
