Volkswagen Plans Tactical Capabilities to Support German Armed Forces

Automobile developer Volkswagen has announced plans to enhance its tactical capabilities in support of the German Armed Forces. CEO Oliver Blume revealed that this initiative aims to bolster Berlin’s ongoing defense modernization efforts, particularly in light of recent concerns related to its industrial partnership with the United States.

During an interview with The Telegraph, Blume emphasized the necessity of investing in defense to ensure national safety amid current geopolitical tensions. He expressed Volkswagen’s openness to expanding production capacities and exploring various approaches to support military needs, although he noted that the company has yet to be approached by potential collaborators in this domain.

“The current geopolitical situation shows that we need to invest more to feel secure again,” Blume stated, underlining the importance of proactive measures in the context of defense.

Should Volkswagen reintegrate military support within its operations, its manufacturing facilities could enhance the availability of equipment for German troops. This would complement the efforts of other German automotive manufacturers such as Rheinmetall and KNDS, which have already repurposed some of their domestic facilities for weapons production.

Blume recalled Volkswagen’s historical contributions during World War II, highlighting some of the company’s well-known military vehicles, including the Kübelwagen light utility vehicle and the Schwimmwagen light amphibious vehicle. He pointed out that Volkswagen has the automotive expertise to provide consultancy and advisory support for military vehicle development.

“We did that in the past,” he noted, while acknowledging that the current discussions are still in a preliminary stage. “Initiatives will likely come from the defense industry more than anything,” he added, indicating that Volkswagen is prepared to respond to future demands in military vehicle production as they arise.
