- The winner’s list included The Washington Post, including Indians Adnan Abidi, Sanna Irshad Mattoo, Amit Dave, and the late Danish Siddiqui of Reuters in Journalism.
- Journalists from Ukraine were recognized with a 2022 Pulitzer Prize special citation, while jurors of journalism’s top honors also recognized coverage of the January 6th attacks on the Capitol, the withdrawal from Afghanistan, and the Surfside condominium collapse in Florida.
- Reuters photographer Danish Siddiqui was posthumously awarded a Pulitzer along with Adnan Abidi, Sanna Irshad Mattoo, and Amit Dave for their images of Covid’s toll on India.
- Siddiqui was killed last year while covering a clash between Afghan special forces and Taliban insurgents.
Who Was Joseph Pulitzer?
- Born In Mako, Hungary, In 1847, He Had A Stint In The Military Before He Built A Reputation Of Being A “Tireless Journalist”. In The Late 1860s He Joined The German-language Daily Newspaper Westliche Post, And By 25 He Had Become A Publisher.
- In 1978, He Became The Owner Of St. Louis Post-dispatch. The Paper Published Several “Investigative Articles And Editorials Assailing Government Corruption, Wealthy Tax-dodgers, And Gamblers”. In 1883, He Also Negotiated The Purchase Of The New York World, And Elevated Its Circulation.
- In 1884, He Was Elected To The US House Of Representatives From New York’s Ninth District As A Democrat And Entered Office On March 4, 1885. During His Tenure, He Led A Movement To Place The Newly Gifted Statue Of Liberty In New York City.
What Is Pulitzer Prize?
- The Awards Were Instituted According To Pulitzer’s Will, Framed In 1904, Where He Made A Provision For The Establishment Of The Pulitzer Prizes As An Incentive To Excellence. Pulitzer Specified Solely 4 Awards In Journalism, 4 In Letters And Drama, 1 For Education, And 5 Travelling Scholarships.
- In His Will, Pulitzer Bestowed An Endowment On Columbia Of $2,000,000 For The Establishment Of A School Of Journalism, One-fourth Of Which Was To Be “Applied To Prizes Or Scholarships For The Encouragement Of Public Service, Public Morals, American Literature, And The Advancement Of Education.”
- After His Death In 1911, The First Pulitzer Prizes Were Awarded In June 1917. Since Then, It Has Been An Award For Achievements In Newspapers, magazines, Online Journalism, Literature, And Musical Composition Within The United States And Is Administered By Columbia University.
- Awarded Yearly In 22 Categories. In 21 Of The Categories, Each Winner Receives A Certificate And A US$15,000 Cash Award (Raised From $10,000 In 2017). The Winner In The Public Service Category Is Awarded A Gold Medal.

- Born In London And Raised In Rhode Island, Lahiri Received Her BA In English Literature From Barnard College And Multiple Degrees From Boston University. She Has Taught Creative Writing At Various Institutions Such as Boston University, Baruch College, Barnard College Etc.
- Pulitzer Award 2003: Mumbai-born Geeta Anand Was Part Of The Team At Wall Street Journal That Won For Reporting On Corporate Corruption. Journalist And Author, She Serves As Dean And Professor At Berkeley Graduate School Of Journalism. She Worked As A Journalist For 27 Years.
- Pulitzer Award 2011: Siddhartha Mukherjee (Indian-American Physician, Biologist, And Author) Won For General Non-fiction For His Demystification Of Cancer In The Emperor Of All Maladies: A Biography Of Cancer. He Did His Schooling At St Columba’s School, New Delhi.
- In 1993 He Received A BS In Biology From Stanford University. He Completed A D Phil In Immunology In 1996 Before Returning To The United States For Medical Studies At Harvard University And Earned An MD In 2000.
- Pulitzer Award 2016: Indian-American Sanghamitra Kalita, Then Managing Editor Of the Los Angeles Times, Won The Pulitzer In The Breaking News Reporting Category With Her Team For Their Coverage Of The San Bernardino Shooting In California In 2015 And The Terror Investigation That Followed.
- Pulitzer Award 2018: In The Feature Photography Category, Danish Siddiqui, Was Awarded The Pulitzer In 2018 For His Images Of The Rohingya Refugee Crisis. He Was Part Of The Team From Reuters That Bagged The Award, Which Included Another Co-recipient From This Year, Adnan Abidi.
