State Of World Population 2022 Report

  • The United Nations Population Fund’s (UNFPA) Flagship State Of World Population Report 2022 Titled “Seeing The Unseen: The Case For Action In The Neglected Crisis Of Unintended Pregnancy” Was Launched.
  • Highlights:
  • Rising Unintended Pregnancies: Between 2015 And 2019, There Were Roughly 121 Million Unintended Pregnancies Globally Each Year.
  • Lack Of Safe, Modern Methods Of Contraception: Globally, An Estimated 257 Million Women Who Want To Avoid Pregnancy Are Not Using Safe, Modern Methods Of Contraception.
  • Rising Rape-related Pregnancies: Nearly A Quarter Of All Women Are Not Able To Say No To Sex. Rape-related Pregnancies Are Equally Or More Likely To Occur Than Pregnancies From Consensual Sex.
  • Rising Abortion: Over 60% of unintended pregnancies, and almost 30% of all pregnancies, end in abortion. 45% of all abortions performed globally are unsafe.
  • Impact of Humanitarian Emergencies: In humanitarian emergencies, such as the ongoing war in Ukraine, many women lose access to contraception and/or experience sexual violence. Estimated that over 20% of refugee women and girls will face sexual violence.

Mission 100% Electrification

  • On a mission mode to electrify its entire Broad-Gauge network to provide environment friendly, green & clean mode of transport to its people under the ‘Mission 100% Electrification – Moving towards net Zero Carbon Emission’ plan, Konkan Railway has accomplished 100% Rail electrification of its entire stretch.
  • The foundation stone for the Electrification of the entire 741 kms route work was laid in November 2015. The total cost of the project is Rs. 1287 crore. The CRS inspection of the entire Konkan Railway route has been successfully conducted in six phases starting from March 2020. CRS inspection of the last section between Ratnagiri & Thivim was carried out on 24/03/2022 and authorization was obtained on 28/03/2022.
  • Konkan Railway being one of the biggest railway routes on the Indian Railway network, the train operations with electric traction will be implemented on the newly electrified KR route in a phased manner.

Rajasthan Diwas

  • The state was formed on 30 March 1949 when Rajputana – the name adopted by the British Raj for its dependencies in the region – was merged into the Dominion of India. Its capital and largest city is Jaipur. Other important cities are Jodhpur, Kota, Bikaner, Ajmer, Bharatpur, and Udaipur.
  • The economy of Rajasthan is the seventh-largest state economy in India with ₹10.20 lakh crore (US$130 billion) in gross domestic product and a per capita GDP of ₹118,000 (US$1,500).
  • Rajasthan ranks 29th among Indian states on the human development index.

Shyamji Krishna Varma Remembered On Punya Tithi

  • Shyamji Krishna Varma (4 October 1857 – 30 March 1930) was an Indian revolutionary fighter, an Indian patriot, lawyer, and journalist who founded the Indian Home Rule Society, India House, and The Indian Sociologist in London.
  • A graduate of Balliol College, Krishna Varma was a noted scholar in Sanskrit and other Indian languages. He pursued a brief legal career in India and served as the Divan of several Indian princely states in India.
  • He had, however, differences with Crown authority, was dismissed following a supposed conspiracy of British colonial officials at Junagadh and chose to return to England. An admirer of Dayanand Saraswati’s approach to cultural nationalism, and Herbert Spencer, Krishna Varma believed in Spencer’s dictum: “Resistance to aggression is not simply justified, but imperative”.
  • In 1905, he founded the India House and The Indian Sociologist, which rapidly developed as an organized meeting point for radical nationalists among Indian students in Britain at the time and one of the most prominent centers for revolutionary Indian nationalism outside India. Krishna Varma moved to Paris in 1907, avoiding prosecution.

5th Edition Of ‘Pariksha Pe Charcha’

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with students, teachers and parents all over the world in the 5th edition of ‘Pariksha Pe Charcha’ programme today at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi. It is a much-awaited annual event in which the Prime Minister responds to questions related to examination stress by students in his uniquely engaging style in a live programme.
  • During this participatory outreach programme, Mr Modi will interact with the students who will appear in the board examinations. Students, teachers and parents who will get to ask questions to the Prime Minister, have been short-listed on the basis of an online creative writing competition on a bouquet of themes. Over 15 lakh students, teachers and parents have registered for the event. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the fourth edition was held online in April last year.
  • Pariksha Pe Charcha’ is an interactive programme wherein students, parents and teachers from India and overseas interact with the Prime Minister. They discuss and overcome the stress emerging out of examinations in order to celebrate life as a festival. School students of Classes 9 to 12, teachers and parents are selected through an online competition for the programme. Due to COVID restrictions, only one thousand students of Delhi NCR, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have been invited to attend the programme at Talkatora Stadium. For the first time, selected students will attend the event at Raj Bhawans of all States and Union Territories.

WTT Star Contender Doha 2022

  • Indian paddler Manika Batra and her partner Archana Kamath settled for a bronze medal at the WTT Star Contender Doha, Qatar 2022 after losing to Chinese Taipei’s Li Yu-Jhun and Cheng I-Ching in the women’s doubles semi-finals, in Doha yesterday.
  • The world No 6 Indian pair lost 0-3 (8-11, 6-11, 7-11) to Chinese Taipei’s duo at the Lusail Sports Arena in the Qatari capital. Manika and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, India’s top-ranked women’s and men’s singles players, were both ousted in the round of 16 women’s and men’s singles respectively. Meanwhile, Sharath Kamal lost both his first-round singles and doubles matches.
