E-Shram Portal Crosses 27 Lakh Registrations

  • A National database of all unorganized workers will help the Government in focusing on targeted and last mile delivery of the welfare schemes for the unorganized workers.
  • So far over 27 Lakh Unorganized workers have already registered.
  •  If a worker is registered on the eSHRAM portal and meets with an accident, he will be eligible for Rs 2.0 Lakh on death or permanent disability and Rs 1.0 lakh on partial disability and upon registration the workers are provided a Universal Account Number, which would make it easy for the portability of social security schemes, Ration Cards etc especially for the migrant workers.

First Dugong Conservation Reserve to be built in India

  • India’s first Dugong conservation reserve will be built in Tamil Nadu for the conservation of Dugong, a marine animal that has been enlisted vulnerable to extinction on a global scale by the World Conservation Union (IUCN).
  • Having been declared vulnerable, the marine animal calls for conserving efforts. Studies have suggested the reasons for the extinction of the animal such as slow breeding rate, fishing, and the loss of habitat.
  • Dugong or the sea cow is the State animal of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. This endangered marine species survive on seagrass and other aquatic vegetation found in the area. It is the only herbivorous mammal that is strictly marine and is the only extant species in the family Dugongidae.
  • Dugongs are usually about three-meter long and weigh about 400 kg. Dugongs have an expanded head and trunk-like upper lip. Elephants are their closest relatives. However, unlike dolphins and other cetaceans, sea cows have two nostrils and no dorsal fin.
  • The reserve will spread over an area of 500 km in Palk Bay on the southeast coast of Tamil Nadu. Palk Bay is a semi-enclosed shallow water body with a water depth maximum of 13 meters. Located between India and Sri Lanka along the Tamil Nadu coast, the dugong is a flagship species in the region.

NIRF Rankings 2021

  • The sixth edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the Education Ministry were released.
  • In the NIRF India 2021, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras retained first position in the Overall Category are as well as in Engineering for the third consecutive year.
  • Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru topped the University as well as Research Institution category introduced for the first time in India Rankings 2021.
  • This is the sixth consecutive edition of India Rankings of Higher education in India.
  • During its maiden year in 2016, rankings were announced for the University category as well as for three domain-specific rankings, namely Engineering, Management and Pharmacy institutions.

Bharatendu Harishchandra remembered on his Birth Anniversary

  • Considered to be the father of Hindi literature and theatre, he was born on 9 September 1850.
  • Writing under the pen name “Rasa”, Harishchandra represented the agonies of the people, the country’s poverty, dependency, inhuman exploitation, the unrest of the middle class and the urge for the progress of the country.
  • Satya Harishchandra (1876), Bharat Durdasha (1875), Niladevi (1881), Andher Nagari (1881) etc are few of his plays.

PM Modi chairs 13th BRICS leaders meet

  • The theme for the Summit is ‘BRICS@15: Intra-BRICS cooperation for continuity, consolidation and consensus’.
  • BRICS is an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
  • This is the second time Prime Minister Modi is chairing the BRICS Summit. Earlier, he had chaired the Goa Summit in 2016.
  • The Indian Chairship of BRICS this year coincides with the 15th anniversary of BRICS, as reflected in the theme for the summit.

Parliamentary Committee’s Report on Official Language

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented the 10th volume of the report of the Parliamentary Committee on Official Language to The President of India.
  • The Committee came into existence because of the arrangements made in the Official Language Act, 1963.
  • This Committee comprises 30 members of Parliament, 20 from Lok Sabha and 10 from Rajya Sabha. The Committee of Parliament on Official Language is responsible to review the progress made in the use of Hindi for the official purpose of the Union.

Main Bhi Digital 3.0

  • Ministry of Housing and urban Affairs(MoHUA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) launched the pilot drive ‘Main Bhi Digital 3.0’ – A special Campaign for Digital Onboarding and Training for street vendors under PM SVANidhi scheme across 223 cities in the country.
  •  The BharatPe, Mswipe, PhonePe, Paytm, Aceware are participating in this drive to issue UPI IDs, QR code and provide digital training. Digital Payment Aggregators will handhold the street vendors to bring about enhanced adoption of digital transactions and behaviour change.
  • So far, 45.5 lakh applications have been received.
  • Out of these, 27.2 lakh loans have been sanctioned and 24.6 lakh loans have been disbursed. The amount disbursed so far is ₹2,444 Cr.
  • More than 70,448 street vendors have repaid their first loan tranche.
  • Out of 22.41 lakh digitally on-boarded street vendors, 7.24 lakh street vendors are digitally active and have recorded 5.92 Cr number of digital transactions.
